Shenelle’s art shines light on T&T’s treasures and culture
By Sandra L Blood
Trinidadian artist Shenelle Sahadeo said she’s very young but
is very concerned about T&T’s history.
She has been producing expressive artistic compositions since
she was five. Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu College was her secondary
school of choice where she attained distinctions in Visual Arts
at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) as
well as in Art and Design at the Caribbean Advanced
Proficiency Examinations (CAPE).
Further afield, she acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual
Arts (Special) with First Class Honours from the UWI, Trinidad,
and graduated as top student in the Department of Creative
and Festival Arts, as well as the highest achiever in the faculty
of Humanities and Education, becoming Valedictorian.
Sahadeo participated in several exhibitions over the years and
displayed work at The Art Society of Mount Hope Annual Art
Gala, the National Council of Indian Culture Heritage Art
Exhibition, The National Gas Company of T&T Ole Mas
Exhibition, The National Museum and Art Gallery of Trinidad
and Tobago, The Rotunda Gallery at the Red House, Parliament
Trinidad and Tobago, among others.
“My dedication and passion for my skill permits the rapid
production of my inimitable pieces which are influenced by
techniques of expressionism, surrealism and realism,”
Sahadeo said.
“My captivating works of art include landscapes, seascapes,
historical scenes, portraits, religious themes, surreal and
conceptual work that highlights mental health, societal issues
Powergen Port-of-Spain
and other important matters, and it’s extremely important for
my works to highlight T&T’s treasures – our antique buildings,
factories; our religious symbols.
What do we show our children.”
Sahadeo describes her work as the limited edition on canvas
collection that’s said to be good for posterity…, memorabilia of
old T&T are created on archival grade (acid-free) 100 per cent
cotton canvas and coated with a UV-protective liquid laminate,
specifically made to stand the test of time, “with each piece is
hand-painted by me.”
The full-time artist and manager of her art company, SS Art
Studio TT (est November 2016), provides a professional
creative art service that focuses on the high-quality production
of Fine
Artwork. After voluntarily working with children, and
teaching, Sahadeo also decided to offer tutoring services in the
Visual Arts as she hopes to become an influential artistic idol
for aspiring young artists.
