UTC, Army, Marvellites in winners row after Carnival break
By Walter Alibey
Championship Division outfit Unit Trust Corporation
(UTC) and Defence Force and Marvellites of the Retro
Division were in winners’ row in the first round of
matches that followed the Carnival break in the Courts
All Sectors Netball League.
Playing at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in
Tacarigua on Thursday, goal-shooter Avi- Ann Archie lit
up the nets with 34 goals from 48 attempts for the UTC
women as they clobbered the
Fire Services Youth Team 57-14 to position themselves
for a shot at the Championship Division title.
Leading the UTC offence, Archie drained 34 goals from
her 48 tries to ensure her team led in all quarters – 16-6
in the first session, 34-9 at the halfway stage and 43-10 at
the end of the third session.

pass beyond the reach of Jabloteh goal-defence Lataya
Thomas during the Courts All Sectors Netball League’s
Championship Division at the Eastern Regional Sports
Indoor Arena in Tacarigua on January 14. Fire Youth won
30-24, however, they fell to a huge, 57-14 defeat to UTC
on Thursday evening. Fire will be back in action today
against Defence Force.

And it was not only about their offence on the day for the
UTC as swift and dogged defending saw them restrict
their opponents to just three goals in the second quarter
and just one in the third. With the UTC offence also being
their solid form of defence, goal-attack Akiela O’Neil and
Stacey Ann Gill contributed to both with 15 goals from 17
attempts and six goals from 13 tries, respectively.
The Fire Services youths, trying to follow in the footsteps
of their senior team which won the Premiership Division,
fell woefully short on the day as they could only have
mustered 28 attempts in total on the day compared to 81
by their opponents.
From those tries, goal-shooter Dionne James led the way
with eight goals from 14 and Jellisa Goodridge had five
from 11 tries.
Goal attack Daniella Hall had just one goal in three
attempts for the Fire Services charges.
Meanwhile, in the Retro Division, Defence Force prevailed
39-22 over arch-rival Police, courtesy of 25 goals from 31
attempts from veteran Anastascia Wilson.
She was assisted by just the lone goal-attack Makeda
Pierre, who sank 14 from 18, as the army/coast guard
combination team enjoyed total control of the match.
The Lawwomen got all their goals from the hands of
Beverly Hernandez –22 from 29–as both goal-attack
Peggy Ann Browne and goal-shooter Anita Pitt-Russell
had two and one try, respectively, but they failed to hit
the target.
In another Retro Division encounter, Marvellites’ Denise
Rose had 21 goals from 37 attempts to defeat Jabloteh 28-
14. Debra Alie also contributed seven from 13 in the
Marvellites’ winning effort.
For the San Juan women, they got a top score of nine from
23 from Julia Britto.
