Sabga impressed by work of ANSA McAL Psychological Research Centre
Chairman of the ANSA McAL Foundation, Andrew Sabga,
paid a visit to the ANSA McAL Psychological Research
Centre at UWI St Augustine on Tuesday to get an update
on the Centre’s research and development plans.
Established in 1989 with a donation from the founder of
the ANSA McAL Group, the late Dr Anthony N Sabga, the
psychological research centre has surveyed national
attitudes on topics ranging from the effects of crime, to
conformity, to social norms and values over the years.
Presenting on the centre’s work, its director, Professor
Derek Chadee, indicated that they also play a crucial role
in teaching research skills to UWI’s undergraduate
psychology students, which develops systematic
thinking.
“Our presence would not have been possible if it were not
for the ANSA McAL Group. And we have grown
tremendously from that initial stage,” Professor Chadee
said. The Centre is currently engaged in innovative
research into the psychological, social and economic
impacts of crime, which could also provide insights into
the extent of unreported crime in T&T.
“You guys have been very busy and we are very proud to
be associated with this because the work is beneficial to
the national good,” remarked Andrew Sabga during the
tour. UWI St Augustine’s BSc in Psychology was only
established after the founding of the centre, and now
admits 120 to 150 undergraduate students a year. At the
end of the day, we are very happy to have been the
catalyst for the Psychology programme,” added Sabga.
The ANSA McAL Psychological Research Centre will
celebrate its 35th anniversary in May 2024.
