Young discusses Calypso with Woodside Energy Energy Minister Stuart Young met with top executives of Woodside Energy T&T yesterday to discuss the company’s deepwater hydrocarbon Calypso Project. In a news release, the Ministry of Energy said the discussions surrounded the work being done, and the progress that has been made, on the deepwater hydrocarbon Calypso Project. “The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, NGC and Woodside Energy are engaged in discussions and active negotiations with respect to the development of these deepwater resources. We also discussed Woodside’s shallow water resources. We concluded our discussions by reiterating our commitment to continue working together,” said the news release from the Ministry of Energy. The Calypso Project is a deepwater natural gas resource located north-east of Tobago. In an interview during the T&T Energy Conference 2023, which was held in January, Juan Vazquez, the T&T country manager of Australian oil and gas company, Woodside Energy, said the Calypso field was then being appraised. But he estimated the deepwater field contained an estimated six trillion cubic feet (tcf ) with potential gas production of 600 million cubic feet per day (mmcf ) to 1,000 mmcf per day. “We have high hopes for Calypso and Woodside’s focus is developing Calypso and finding ways to commercialise it. Deepwater always has its particular characteristics that define how you will develop it,” Vazquez emphasised. In January, he said because Calypso is still in the early stage of assessment, the cost of the overall potential project is still being calculated. “The main cost-drivers are the wells and the offshore facilities, like all deepwater projects, so those are the two main drivers.” In April 2023, an offshore technology website, reported that production from Calypso is expected to begin in 2028 and is forecast to peak in 2032, at approximately 418 mmcfd of natural gas based on economic assumptions. Attending the meeting from Woodside Energy team were Shiva McMahon, executive vice president, international operations, Juan Vazquez, president and country manager Woodside Energy T&T, Stacy Patrick, project director and Carla Noel-Mendez, corporate affairs manager. Acting permanent secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, Sandra Fraser was also in the meeting with Woodside Energy.
